Berlin: Me Exchanged

Kolejna z wystaw Europejskiego Miesiąca Fotografii, o których zamierzałem napisać, jest pokazywana w galerii Iny Köhler (Husemannstr. 27) do 30 grudnia. Zatytułowana "Me Exchanged. Von der Anpassung des Menschen an mobile Zeiten" ("Ja wymieniony. O adaptacji człowieka do epoki mobilności") składa się z trzydziestu dyptyków. Każdy z nich zawiera portrety młodych berlińczyków (w wieku 16-17 lat), którzy brali udział w programie wymiany młodzieży, przed i po wyjeździe, uzupełnione o krótkie wypowiedzi portretowanych. Zmiany, które zaszły w twarzach poszczególnych nastolatków podczas wyjazdu, z pewnością mają związek z ich przeżyciami. Zwłaszcza że  w tym wieku - wieku intensywnego poszukiwania własnej tożsamości i własnego miejsca na świecie - jest się gotowym do zanurzenia się głęboko w świat obcej kultury i nowych relacji. Jak zgodnie podkreślają ci, którzy byli uczestnikami wymiany, pozostaje ona głęboko w pamięci i zostawia wyraźne znamię na charakterze. Otwartą sprawą pozostaje, na ile obserwowane zmiany faktycznie są wynikiem doświadczeń z wymiany młodzieżowej, niemniej sama możliwość porównania wydaje się cenna i ciekawa poznawczo.

Another exhibition from the European Month of Photography, which I intended to write about, is shown at the Ina Köhler Gallery (Husemannstr. 27) until December, 30th. Titled "Me Exchanged. On  Human Adaptation to a Mobile Age" it contains thirty diptychs. Each of them is made of portraits of young people from Berlin (aged 16-17 years) who took part at a youth exchange programme, before and after their sojourn, accompanied by brief statements of the portrayed. The changes, obviously present in the teenagers' faces, are surely related to their experiences. Especially at the age of intense search for identity and their place in the world - the subjects are ready to dive deep into the world of a foreign culture and new relationships. As those who participated in the exchange unanimously underline, this experience remains firmly in the memory and leaves a clear mark on the personality. It remains open, however, to what extent the observed changes are actually due to the experience of youth exchange, yet the opportunity to make the comparisons on one's own is cognitively valuable and interesting.
